So What is this All About?

Hello all and welcome to the blog! Anachronous means something that belongs to an earlier time period but is being used now. It is another way of saying old fashioned, but has the distinct advantage of also being a pun on my name.

My name is Ana and I grew up in a small rural town before moving to Seattle to attend the University of Washington.

A slightly out of date picture of me

While there I studied molecular biology and I am very passionate about science. But I am also passionate about exploring how things were done in the past and how we might learn some lessons that are useful to apply to our modern life. This was in large part inspired by my Gran who taught me a lot about old ways of doing things.

Her tips were especially useful for a college student on a budget as she was born in 1930 just after the start of the Great Depression and knows a lot about making a budget stretch. She encouraged me to cook from scratch rather than buying premade things, which is both cheaper and tastes better. She taught me how to use every part of a chicken and how to use up leftovers well so that nothing goes to waste.

First roasted with the juices made into gravy

Then made into soup

I think a lot can be learned from the past about conserving resources and learning to make things ourselves. This helps us to rely less on corporations (who often exploit our planet and its people) to make things for us. And can also help to reduce spending because making things yourself can often be cheaper than buying them from a store. I would like to explore this idea more and this blog will partially be a record of my journey in learning these lost skills and partially be me sharing tips about some of the skills that I already know.

Like crocheting! (at least the basics)

I hope you will join me and that you will be inspired to try making some things yourself! If each of us  made just one thing ourselves on a regular basis rather than buying premade, the impact on our world in terms of waste reduction and the reduction of exploitation could be huge! So please know that you do not have to do things the way I'm doing them or think that you have to do everything perfectly. I certainly am not perfect in my pursuit of these goals. But I hope that this blog inspires you to find your own way to reduce your footprint on our world.

P.S. For more lighthearted information about me please check out my introduction video.
